The Cross

There is no Christianity without the Cross. The Cross is every Christian's pride. We received our salvation through the Cross and it is the sign of God's love for us. Jesus Christ Himself said, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me" (Luke 9:23; cf. Matthew 16:24; Mark 8:34). He also makes the cross a condition required of every Christian when he says, "And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me" (Matthew 10:38; cf. Luke 14:27). St. Paul, in his epistles, repeats several times that the Cross is the Christian's power, pride and life. "For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but for us who are being saved, it is the power of God" (1 Corinthians 1:18). "But we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God" (1 Corinthians 1:23). "But God forbid that I should boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world" (Galatians 6:14). "For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified" (1 Corinthians 2:2). "O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you that you should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed among you as crucified?" (Galatians 3:1). Thus, we hang a cross high on our Churches from the outside and within the Church, especially the Orthodox.
