Interesting Holy Bible Facts
St. Peter, St. James, and St. John
Appear alone together THREE TIMES in the Holy Gospels
St. Peter, St. James, and St. John were given special glimpses of the Divinity of the Lord Jesus Christ. In the following Biblical instances St. Peter, St. James, and St. John were singled out three times by the Lord Jesus Christ from among the disciples to witness what the other disciples were not chosen to:
Transfiguration
- Matthew 17:1-2 - "Now after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, led them up on a high mountain by themselves and He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun and His clothes became as white as the light."
- Luke 9:28 - "Now it came to pass, about eight days after these savings, that He took Peter, John, and James and went up on the mountain to pray. As He prayed, the appearance of His face was altered, and His robe became white and glistening."
Raising Jarirus Daughter's
- Mark 5:37 - "And He permitted no one to follow Him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James."
- Luke 8:51 - "When He came into the house, He permitted no one to go in except Peter, James, and John and the father, and the mother of the girl."
Garden of Gethsemane
- Matthew 26:37 - "And He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee and He began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed."
- Mark 14:33 - "And He took Peter, James, and John with Him, and He began to be troubled and deeply distressed."
How do the Early Church Fathers explain the choosing of the three on three different occasions throughout the life of the Lord Jesus Christ on earth?
St. Peter, St. James, and St. John DID NOT contend for Glory:
St. Clement of Alexandria: "Says that Peter, James, and John (after the Savior's Ascension) although preeminently honored by the Lord, did not contend for glory. Rather, they appointed James the Just, as bishop of Jerusalem."
Can you find any other appearance for St. Peter, St. James, and St. John alone with the Lord Jesus Christ?
(Hint: The raising of St. Peter's mother-in-law does not count. Why? St. Andrew was present)
