Who is God? What is God Like?

"The Lord by wisdom founded the earth; by understanding He established the heavens; by His knowledge the depths were broken up, and the clouds drop down the dew" (Proverbs 3:19-20).

There is something about knowing God that is hard to answer verbally, for He is everything you want and more. He is the love that you long for, He is the Father that you wish you have, He is the friend that you can share all your secrets, dreams, and thoughts with; He is your guide, your example through life, and more.

As toddlers we knew very little about our own fathers and had completely no understanding yet and we had no knowledge about his name, his character, and his position. But the toddler knows when you ask him; who is your father? He will quickly point at him for he knows and experiences the love, the care, the touches, and the hugs of his own father.

Also if a poor woman that is illiterate to read the Holy Bible but she has enough faith and love for God, God may bless her more than a person who is highly educated and has more knowledge about Him.

"Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and His ways past finding out! 'For who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has become His counselor?' ‘Or who has first given to Him? And it shall be repaid to him?' For of Him and through Him and to Him are all things, to whom be glory forever. Amen" (Romans 11:33-36).

Who is God?
Many times we stop and ask the question; many times we walk without an answer. Is it just curiosity or is it just we fail not to look? God has given us His Holy Book to read and answer all that we need to know about Him!

When you ask the question to anyone you meet, you will find a limited answer right away, as if God is limited by what is our limited list of attributes.

Some will say such as; He is pretty much perfect in every way, powerful and mighty, heavenly, eternal, never makes mistakes, full of unconditional love, etc. Or they may say we do not know or there is no God.

In the Holy Bible we learn so much about God such as;

  • God is powerful: "For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him" (Colossians 1:16).

  • God is love: "Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love" (1 John 4:7-8).

  • God is perfectly righteous and just: "He is the Rock, His work is perfect; for all His ways are justice, a God of truth and without injustice; righteous and upright is He" (Deuteronomy 32:4).

  • God is Holy and pure: "For thus says the High and lofty one who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: 'I dwell in the high and holy place, with him who has a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.'" (Isaiah 57:15).

  • God is majestic: "Why should the Gentiles say, 'So where is their God?' But our God is in heaven; He does whatever He pleases" (Psalm115:2-3).

  • God is eminent: "Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend into heaven, You are there; if I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there" (Psalm 139:7-8).

What God will say?

I am who I am and no one is like me now or ever will be! "I, even I, am the Lord, and besides Me there is no savior" (Isaiah 43:11).

Why we must learn what God is like?

  • He created us in His own image
  • In order to have a personal relationship and fellowship with Him
  • He is our role model in everything we do
  • Assurance that He will never forsake us
  • Longing to be like Him
  • Consequence of sin will separate us from Him
  • Our actions become full of responsibility and accountability
  • Gives us the comfort that He is watching over us
  • Reminding us that He created us for a purpose
  • He has a plan for each one of us
  • He will never force Himself on any one of us

"My son, let them not depart from your eyes—keep sound wisdom and discretion; so they will be life to your soul and grace to your neck. Then you will walk safely in your way, and your foot will not stumble. When you lie down, you will not be afraid; yes, you will lie down and your sleep will be sweet. Do not be afraid of sudden terror, nor of trouble from the wicked when it comes; For the Lord will be your confidence, and will keep your foot from being caught" (Proverbs 3:21-26).

Conclusion
God is beautiful, magnificent, incredible, awesome, etc. Knowing about who He is, how He exists, what is He like will assure us and give us comfort. But know this, it does not matter how much we know about Him but what matters most is where we are in our relationship with Him. For having an idea about God and His glory will not amount to anything if we do not take action to know Him personally and intimately.

What is God Like?

His is like the air you breathe
His is like the water you drink
That
You can never live without
So
Get to know Him better
Before it is too late
And
Thank Him for everything you are
And
Everything you own
For
God is awesome!
