How do I convince my friends that having a girl friend is not an essential, if not a wrong thing? Their excuse is that having a girl friend provides one with experience, and also helps me decide if I really want to consecrate my life to God.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with  NOT having a girl friend. On the contrary this is the right thing to do. Unless you are ready for marriage and ready to commit yourself to the one person you feel is right for you and would like to spend the rest of your life with, you should not consider dating. An excellent book you should read and get your friends to read is "I Kissed Dating Goodbye" by Joshua Harris published by Multnomah Publishers, Inc. Also "Purity" published by the Coptic Orthodox Church in Melbourne Australia.

The life of purity is for everyone. There is no difference between one who is looking for a monastic life, celibacy or marriage "keep yourself pure" (1 Tim 5:22). We all have the door open to grow in sonship and become ambassadors of Christ on earth.
